...turn from our wicked ways...

Anyone who looks around our country for the past few years, will note the depravity that our world has sunk to.  We can point to the sexual perversions, the violence, the blatant paganism in our culture.  But there are many more aspects which mark our wickedness as a people, and we do not have to look beyond our own circles many times.

While we can identify the wickedness of idolatry in pagan cultures, do we recognize the wickedness of the idolatry in our own lives?  The pursuit of wealth, self glorification, and the idolizing of actors, athletes, and royalty are wicked in God's eyes.  You shall have no other god's before me, He says.  But we make gods out of hockey, football, and other activities.  We worship our own past times, and sacrifice a relationship with God for our own personal time.  In some cases we try to legitimize it by calling it family time.  But all the same, we put other things ahead of God, and that is wicked in His view.

God speaks many times of the wickedness of the rich and powerful using their money and power and connections to enslave and extort from the weaker and poor.  Anyone who reads the book of Micah, or Isaiah or Jeremiah or Jonah or Jesus' words can see the evil that God considers it to rule over another person in an unjust manner.  But here before us we see the entrapment of mankind by government, by unscrupulous businessmen, by royals whose only goal is to elevate self and extract from the common.  We should all have the right to attempt to achieve an improved standard of living and to ease our workload and provide a legacy for our descendants, but we should never do this on the backs of and at the expense of other people.

We see judges and rulers and politicians taking bribes and handing out unjust sentences based upon politics and wealth and connections.  God's anger boils at the unjust.  Again Micah 6:8, states that one of the core purposes of man is to do justly.

The value of human life is almost gone.  As a country we are worried over the possibility of catching and succumbing to Corona Virus.  So far in the first 3 months of 2020, we have seen approximately 800,000 cases of the virus, with approximately 40,000 deaths around the world.  This is tragic and devastating, but during that same time we have had 10,500,000 abortions worldwide.  On one hand the death of 40,000 and our own possible infection is a world wide emergency but it is our "right" to take the lives of 262 times more inconvenient innocent lives.  Both cases is the elevation of self over God's moral law.  The blood of all these innocent lives is a great wickedness in God's eyes.

What will it take for us to turn from these wicked ways? Maybe a pandemic that makes us all think.  A plague that is not a respecter of persons.  Something that makes us consider our actions and what God thinks of us.  God is watching, and we have been found wanting.
